Good or Bad Advice

Every now and then i get drawn into discussions within garden related forums. One such discussion recently revolved around a contractor being asked to 'price a new lawn ?'
The contractor stated that:
1. the existing grass looked Ok and: 2. There was a lot of thatch within the lawn.
The contractor was quoting to re turf the lawn BUT was considering digging down to a certain depth and adding an amount of top soil and or peat / sand mixture.

That was the basis of the original post.

Now, i couldn't resist some input to this discussion and advised a regime of lawn care involving Feeding, Scarification ( to remove the thatch) if conditions allowed, Aeration, Top dressing and overseeding with an appropriate seed mix (Seed varieties provided), THEN return to the lawn in the spring and re feed overseed if necessary.

The response was that the client was requesting a 'fine lawn' it was clear that the course of action was already decided upon !

Now let us consider a couple of issues concerning the original post.
The lawn looked OK and there was a lot of thatch. There was no information as to what the original lawn grasses were. it was entirely possible that the existing lawn grass varieties were of a 'fine' mix in the first place.
The below photographs are of a lawn belonging to one of my clients: the first was taken on the 16/09/2011 you will see the bags of lawn top dressing prior to application. Th elawb was overseeded at this time as well with a Poa pratense, Lolium perenne, Fescu and Agrostis seed mix. The lawn had been fed 1 week prior and Aerated / scarified 2 weeks prior. The second photograph is of the lawn 30/09/2011. You will see the result of the feeding. The final photograph was taken on the 11/11/2011. Please note the lush green sward !!! Given the mild weather that we are still having the benefit of here in the UK i was able to mow the lawn, which is still growing !. The grass seed has germinated and is progressing nicely and has thickened the existing lawn as well.

Now i'm going to ask you to consider whether re turfing was the correct advice to have given ?
